This week in CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technology to Education, we have been tasked with taking our research from last week and our maker kit knowledge from two weeks ago and combine these thoughts into a lesson plans within our context! I have decided to hypothesize a potential lesson plan with a unit that I am currently navigating through with students in English 11 - This I Believe. Check out the plan below!
Lesson - Mentor Texts Evolution Course - English 11 Duration - 3 days in 30 minute sessions Student Materials
Common Core State Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.2 Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.3 Analyze the impact of the author's choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.5 Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.4 Present information, findings, and supporting evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning, alternative or opposing perspectives are addressed, and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and a range of formal and informal tasks. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.5 Make strategic use of digital media in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.1 Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grades 11-12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.1.a Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.1.b Work with peers to promote civil, democratic discussions and decision-making, set clear goals and deadlines, and establish individual roles as needed. Student Learning Objectives (Students will be able to...)
Research This lesson plan would bridge portions of the digital divide between students that Culatta (2017) discusses in the opening minutes of his TedxTalk "Imagining Learning." The new forms of technology - Makey Makey and Scratch - are being used in ways that are innovative and have real world skills that students may continue to build on once they leave my classroom. Learning is being personalized for each student because I am identifying their interests in certain themes that they may want to write about. The personalized learning, though, may or may not be held onto as students work together in a project-based setting. It will be up to the students to bring forward into the group discussion person thoughts and ideas that they have with them about the mentor texts. This is where personalized learning advocates may disagree with this work being a true representation of "personalized learning." Day 1 - 30 minutes
Day 2 - 30 minutes
Day 3 - 30 minutes
Rationale The discussion-based work around several mentor texts is important for students to see how different authors construct their own essay in order to give students a better idea for their writing process. This lesson would provide an evolution to the typical group work analysis of various This I Believe essays. The use of Makey Makey and Scratch push students' thinking and permit them to create something completely new, and perhaps, out of their comfort zone. References:
